How do I start using MandaTone?

1. Download MandaTone from the App Store.
2. Choose a language in the app.
3. Start with the four-question Coach check. It is a starting point, not a full level assessment.
4. Review the Coach's suggested next practice. Access is checked when you start it.

Do I need to create an account?

No. MandaTone creates an anonymous account automatically so you can start learning immediately. You can optionally sign in with Google or Apple to sync your progress across devices.

Common Questions

Why does MandaTone need microphone access?

MandaTone asks for microphone access when you start a speaking exercise. If access is off, the exercise explains how to enable it in iOS Settings. Return to MandaTone and tap the microphone; recording does not start automatically. If iOS restarts the app after a permission change, reopen your practice.

My pitch curve looks flat or doesn't appear

• Make sure you are in a quiet environment
• Hold your device 15-20 cm from your mouth
• Speak at a normal volume — not too quiet, not too loud
• If you recorded silence (no speech detected), the pitch curve will not display

My score seems too low / too high

MandaTone uses Microsoft Azure for pronunciation assessment against the practice text. The returned scores can include pronunciation accuracy, fluency, and completeness; the pitch comparison is a separate visual aid. A high score on one short attempt is not a full assessment of your Mandarin ability. Tips for practice:
